This is the story of how this next album came to be. For the official track list head to the band content page, a gift from 'Ol Murdoc to his lovelies.
Now, 19 years later, Paula comes back into our lives. Without any warning, she shows up at our studio. However, she’s not alone. Paula brought her 18 year old daughter “Bean” with her, claiming either 2D or Murdoc is the dad (although she doesn’t know which one of them). Even though she’d cheated on 2D, 2D had very mixed feelings about the situation. Obviously he is still angry, but at the same time he still loved her and had a weak spot for the hoe. The whole band was surprised and shocked by the situation but we decided to let her stay, seeing that a child was involved in this situation.
But we knew, Paula didn’t show up without a reason. She was angry with our band because she got kicked out, but she was also jealous of Noodle who had taken her spot; she is seeking revenge. Her plan was to sabotage Noodle and get Bean to take her place. She planned to take the money that Bean would have made playing in the band from her, and cause more havoc and trouble for the rest of us when she could.
However, we found out that the bond between Paula and her daughter was very bad. Paula was and still is a fucking crack addict who only knows how to focus on herself, Bean never even got the chance to develop even a bit of love for her mother. In order to forget about everything, Bean developed a knack for playing the guitar and burning things. Watching the fire relaxes her mind. She likes to think of it as some sort of therapy she developed for herself. Although the fact that some of her guitars didn’t survive the fire saddens her (she lost her favorite guitar, Pyro to a fire once), Bean actually is a great guitarist just like her mom. You could even say it’s in her blood.
As no one knows whether 2D or Murdoc was the father, they both actually tried their best to be there for her. However, they were -far from- the best dad figures. Let’s just say that they had no clue how to act or what exactly a father has to do, which makes their actions mostly clumsy and sometimes inappropriate. The whole situation with Paula being around doesn’t make it easier, but eventually they do manage to work it out (somehow). Noodle and Bean actually get along really well and Russel acts like an uncle to her, while the “dads” are always trying their best to be a dad.
After a while Paula, who had actually managed to gain back some of our fucking trust, had figured out a way to put her plan into action. She managed to find and pay a guitar technician to sabotage Noodles gear.
The next day, as Noodle was getting ready for practice, she had been electrified by her gear during setup. Fortunately she survived the “accident”, but she had sustained bad injuries to the nerves in her hands, that caused her to have trouble with playing her guitar. She needed some time to recover in order to be able to play her amazing ass guitar solo’s again.
Although it wasn't just an accident, none of us knew it at the time. However, Noodle did feel suspicious about the situation, because Paula hadn’t been the nicest to her and she just couldn’t understand how it could’ve happened. Luckily for Noodle, Russel also had his suspicions. Despite that, they didn’t say them out loud because of the situation with 2D, who even seemed to start liking her again.
After the whole incident, Paula took her chance to silently set up the rest of the band against our poor Noodle. She didn’t spoke badly of Noodle, but made obviously clear how unclear this situation and Noodle's condition was. What if Noodle didn’t recover fully? How were they going to be able to perform without their godly guitarist?
Eventually after 2D and Murdoc started to realize the problem and even Russel had his suspicions, we figured that we still did needed a guitarist. This was when Paula mentioned Bean’s guitar skills as a way to get rid of Noodle for good. Noodle and Bean were friends though so they were not really on board with the idea especially Noodle. However, Paula told a little white lie and caused tension between the two friends. Noodle was angry because she thought Bean had believed in Paula and confronted her about Paula's lie, but Bean didn't believe in Paula's lie in the first place and was hurt Noodle thought she would believe her devious mother over her best friend. Russel noticing the tension between them confronted Paula about it, but Paula pretended not to know what he was talking about.
Noodle and Bean's tension escalated even more afterwards, because Noodle refused to stop playing, even though her hand was injured. They fought about this so often to the point that Noodle refused to talk to or acknowledge Bean unless she apologized for trying to get her to stop playing. Bean felt really fucked up about this as Noodle's treatment toward her reminded her of her painful childhood with Paula. To ease her mind off of this she disappeared for a few nights and came back with a few new burns and a new song. At this point we were really worried about both of them. So, the rest of us Gorillaz realized that the only way these two were ever going to speak is if force them too.
So we decided to let them do a shred-off anyways as per Paula's request. The best guitarist would win and earn their place in the band.
However, before the battle could take place, Paula had decided to go on vacation and was apprehended at the airport, because the stupid bitch was trying to smuggle crack into another country (once a crackhead always a crackhead). It happened so suddenly, Bean and 2D were left in shock and did not know how they should process it. The rest of us handled the news way better. After her arrest, 2D and Murdoc decided to do a actual DNA test to see if Bean was in fact one of their own, after which they find out Bean is in fact (surprisingly) both their child (this is a very rare situation which is called super fecundation).
One week after all of this shit happened, Bean came to us when we were in the studio and told us all about Paula's devious plan and instead of getting rid of her we decided to let her stay with us from now on as she was really honest and she is not a bad girl, she is actually way too good for us. She is not an official band member but she is family. After this she and Noodle also made up (thank god). Thanks to her and the adventure Paula dragged us through once more we got the concept for our next album:
The Paula C. Chronicles
THE END.
